Dr. Scherry Bryant is a graduate of Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy and currently serves as a pharmacist at Lakeshore Pharmacy. In addition to her children, Dr. Bryant is extremely passionate about medical mission work. Over the last seven years, Dr. Bryant has traveled and served on eight medical mission trips: seven trips to Ecuador and once to Nicaragua. “When we go to Ecuador we see about 600 patients each time. Nicaragua…I don’t know exactly how many but it was a lot. I’ve never thought about how many total patients we’ve seen. That’s really humbling.” We asked Dr. Bryant how often during her trips does she feel like she is exactly where she is supposed to be and doing what she is supposed to be doing: “Every time. Every single time I go. For example, last summer we traveled to Ecuador a few months after they suffered a big earthquake. We were doing a clinic about two hours from the major damage and we had people visit because they didn’t have access to medical care. We were able to give them ibuprofen and amoxicillin, just basic things to us that they thought was the best thing ever. We served them in that way and it gave them a reason to come back to church.” Dr. Bryant’s passion for medical mission work has extended to her family. “My daughter goes with me. She’s in high school and wants to go to pharmacy school, so she’s been helping me in the pharmacy. And next summer my son is going for the first time. I just love it. I really love it.” With that being said, a week of nonstop work in foreign country can be tough. “At the end of the week you’re very tired and because of that you may not feel well, but you have a new appreciation for things. When we see the impact that we make it’s all worth it.”
